Photojournalist Nicole Tung Honored with James Foley Award for Conflict Reporting

The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation in partnership with the Online News Association proudly honors photojournalist Nicole Tung as the recipient for the 2018 James Foley Award for Conflict Reporting.

Tung’s reporting has spanned the Middle East, where she focuses her visual storytelling on the effects of ISIS, the aftermath of the Arab Spring and the developing refugee situation across Sub Saharan Africa.

“I nominated Nicole for continuing Jim’s legacy of moral courage in pursuing the the truth through her skillful and beautiful photography that reflects the plight of suffering civilians in conflict zones,” Foundation President Diane Foley said. “Most recently her poignant photos of Rohingya mothers and children.”

Tung is based in Istanbul and has covered social issues across the Middle East, Asia and Africa as a dedicated advocate for freelancers’ safety.

“The selection committee was impressed by the power and variety of imagery Nicole has captured in conflict zones on multiple continents, and by her consistent focus on the humanity of her subjects,” said Eric Carvin, Social Media Editor at The Associated Press and chair of the selection committee.
