New BOFH Campaign Mural Installation in Georgetown

WHEN: Tuesday, July 16, 2024 (Media availability and press conference beginning at 5:30 pm EDT)

WHERE: 3125 M Street, NW; Washington, D.C. 20007 (“Freedom Alley” – next to Levain bakery)

WHO:  Family members of American hostages and wrongful detainees in the BOFH campaign

On Tuesday, July 16, the Bring Our Families Home Campaign, an organization of family members of Americans wrongfully detained or held hostage abroad, will be partnering with the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation to unveil a new wheat paste mural featuring the nine Americans in the Campaign who have not yet returned home at “Freedom Alley” in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D. C.

The new mural comes two years after the campaign’s inaugural wheat paste mural at the same location, which featured the faces of nearly twenty Americans who were held hostage or wrongfully detained abroad at the time, including WNBA player Brittney Griner. Due to the passage of time, that mural has since faded beyond recognition and was taken down in December 2023 by several family members of those who remain in captivity.

While the new mural is designed by the same artist, Isaac Campbell, it features a completely different design that more starkly reflects the passage of time and the need for urgent action for the safety and health of those that remain wrongfully detained around the world. This is somberly illustrated by the fate of Majd Kamalmaz, who, as of May 2024, is presumed to have died in captivity in Syria, serving as a tragic reminder of the human cost of inaction.
