The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation Statement on the Release of Brittney Griner

The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation welcomes the news that Brittney Griner has been released from her unjust detention in Russia and is returning to the United States. “This is the moment that every family whose loved one is being held hostage or unjustly detained overseas dreams of,” said Foundation Founder and President Diane Foley. “We sincerely appreciate the Biden administration intense diplomatic efforts to bring Brittney home safely.”

“However,” continued Ms. Foley, “it is heartbreaking that Paul Whelan is not also on that flight home with Brittney. The Foley Foundation urges the Biden administration to relentlessly press for Paul’s swift release from Russia, where he has been unjustly held since December 28, 2018. Even as we celebrate Brittney’s return, our hearts are with Paul, the Whelan family, and the families of all who are still being held overseas this holiday season.”
