George Glezmann is a 65-year-old American citizen who was visiting Kabul, Afghanistan as a tourist when he was seized by the Taliban’s intelligence services on December 5, 2022. He is held by the Taliban without just cause or formal charge. George was traveling lawfully in Afghanistan fulfilling his lifelong passion of visiting different countries and exploring various cultures and cultural artifacts. George has visited well over 100 countries and, in fulfillment of his passion for cultural exploration, he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology in 2017.
When George was abducted, he was on a vacation from his job as an airline mechanic for Delta Airlines in Atlanta, Georgia, where he and his wife Aleksandra reside. On October 10, 2023, the Secretary of State designated George a wrongful detainee pursuant to the Robert Levinson Hostage Recovery and Hostage-taking Accountability Act. Aleksandra has only had periodic and limited telephone contact with George while he has been in captivity. George’s health has deteriorated significantly while he had been in detention, and he has medical issues that require immediate care.
A bi-partisan coalition of the Georgia congressional delegation are supportive of the efforts to secure George’s safe release and return home. On February 27, 2024, Senators Warnock and Ossoff wrote the White House urging President Biden to “sustain and redouble, with the utmost urgency, your efforts to secure [George’s] release.”
