Diane Foley, Co-Author Of American Mother

American Mother book cover

“American Mother” is the compelling memoir of Diane Foley, a mother who, in the course of confronting her son’s killer, gets to the dark heart of violence and the peace of redemption.

She is the guest at Carol Joynt’s next Q&A Cafe. Diane’s son, freelance journalist James Foley, was reporting in Syria in 2014 when he was captured, tortured and publicly beheaded by ISIS. Seven years later, Diane spent three days in a Virginia courthouse conference room with her son’s murderer, an Islamic State fighter, a face to face encounter that inspired her to tell her story.

In the wake of her loss, she also contributed to a documentary about James’ murder and founded the James W. Foley Foundation to advocate for innocent Americans, and journalists especially, held hostage or wrongfully detained. Politics & Prose will be on hand to sell Diane’s book, which was co-authored by Colum McCann, a National Book Award winner. Lunch, a glass of wine or non-alcoholic beverage and a Georgetown cupcake are included.

This event is open to non-members.
