The DC/DOX Documentary Film Festival and the Foley Foundation

DC/DOX is a major festival that celebrates the power and potential of documentary film. The 2025 edition was held in Washington D.C. in June 11-14 and featured two documentaries related to the Foley Foundation mission.

  • Armed Only With A Camera: The Life and Death of Brent Renaud : Brent Renaud was the first American journalist killed during the war between Russia and Ukraine. A documentary filmmaker, Brent’s story is similar to that of James Foley. The powerful film highlights the critical role of conflict journalists and the dangers they face. In a panel following the film, moderated by Chuck Todd, Foley Foundation Advisory Council member Jere Van Dyk represented the foundation’s journalist safety program.
  • Take No Prisoners film features Roger Carstens , former Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs (SPEHA) and current Foley Foundation Board Member.  The movie follows Ambassador Carsten’s efforts to free Eyvin Hernandez, a public defender from Los Angeles who was wrongfully detained by the government of dictator Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela. Eyvin Hernandez is now free—thanks to the efforts of the SPEHA team, the tireless advocacy of his family, friends, and the Bring Our Families Home Campaign , spotlighted in the film. BOFH, led by families of American hostages and wrongful detainees, is the Foley Foundation’s public advocacy arm. Powered by the Foundation’s strategic and operational support, the Campaign fights for their loved ones’ freedom.

At the screening, the Campaign was represented by the family members of Jorge Marcelo Vargas, and Lucas Hunter who are both held hostage in Venezuela. The event concluded with a discussion with Roger Carstens and co-directors Adam Ciralsky and Subrata De. Each of them highlighted the names of all of the American captives whom the Campaign represents. We encourage readers to donate, follow the Campaign on social media (@BOFHCampaign ), like, and share the Campaign’s posts to bring awareness to the plight of these American nationals.
