Wrongful Detainee

2017

Alina López Miyarez is a Cuban American educator devoted to teaching chronically ill children in Miami. In January 2017, Alina was lured to Cuba by her ex-husband and was sentenced to 13 years in prison by Cuban military court on charges of espionage. In 2022, the United Nations declared her detention arbitrary, finding that her rights were violated during prosecution. The Cuban government responded to these findings by temporarily releasing Alina from detention, however, Alina continued to be unjustly held in Cuba on an exit ban. She was taken back into custody by Cuban authorities in late 2023 and has been wrongfully detained since that time.

Alina has urgent medical needs that are worsening without the treatment she requires in the United States. The State Department has requested her humanitarian release, but the Cuban government has yet to acknowledge this petition. Without outside intervention, Alina will continue to be unjustly detained in Cuba, denied the medical care she requires, and separated from her family.
