Wilbert was on personal travel in Venezuela when he was forcibly disappeared by Maduro’s government. His family has not had contact with him since he was able to get a single message out during the early stages of his unjust detention.

Castañeda was released on July 18, 2025, as part of a prisoner exchange involving the return of over 250 Venezuelans deported from the U.S.
