WASHINGTON – The Foley Foundation announced today that the 12th annual James W. Foley Freedom Run 5K will take place in October in Rochester, NH, Washington, DC, and virtually worldwide, inviting participants to run, walk, and stand for freedom.
The Freedom Run honors the life and legacy of journalist James Wright Foley, whose courage, compassion, and commitment to truth continue to inspire journalists, advocates, and communities worldwide. Each year, runners, walkers, families, and supporters gather to celebrate Jim’s legacy, raise awareness about Americans held hostage or wrongfully detained abroad, and support the Foundation’s work to protect journalists reporting in hostile and high-risk environments.
Foley Foundation President and Founder Diane Foley emphasized the urgency of this year’s run: “The wrongful detention of Americans abroad remains a growing national security threat, while journalists around the world continue to face censorship, intimidation, and violence for seeking the truth. Each new detention case and every attack on press freedom is a reminder of why Jim’s legacy matters. He believed deeply in the power of courageous journalism, and through the Freedom Run we honor that legacy while supporting efforts to bring Americans home and protect those who risk their lives to keep the public informed.”
Event Details: The Foley Freedom Run offers online registration, technical race shirts, individual fundraising tools, sponsorship and volunteer opportunities, and professional chip timing in Rochester and Washington. Rochester participants can also enjoy a Runners Expo, Kids Fun Run, and post-race celebration with live music and a beer garden. Virtual participants can join from anywhere in the world.
Amy Coyne, Director of Corporate and Community Relations, noted the event’s inclusive spirit: “The Foley Freedom Run is truly for all. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or joining with family and friends, this event celebrates Jim’s legacy in a powerful, joyful way. There’s something here for everyone.”

ABOUT THE JAMES W. FOLEY LEGACY FOUNDATION
Conflict journalist James W. Foley was taken hostage by ISIS terrorists in 2012 while covering the Syrian civil war. His captors tortured and ultimately brutally murdered him in 2014. The Foundation was established less than three weeks after his death. Inspired by the moral courage of James Foley, the Foundation advocates for American hostages and wrongful detainees held abroad and promotes journalist safety.
